5 ways to fix the facial makeup mistakes every woman makes- including me and you ;]

1. testing foundation

We are all guilty of swiping foundation on our hands, our arms, and our cheeks. But guess what? There are two easier and effective ways. Sephora has an amazing piece of machinery that actually takes a picture of your neck, cheek, and temple areas to find the best shades of foundation for you! Just pop into a sephora store with a beauty station and ask for help. They will even help you find the best texture of foundation for your skin type.

If a sephora visit is not in your schedule, the best place to try a swipe of foundation is actually your neck. Your face gets hit with UV rays and puberty which cause it not to be the same color as the rest of your body. Thus, if you test the foundation on your neck, the foundation you will then put on your face will look more natural!

 1A: When to apply foundation

When you have found your perfect shade/texture/brand foundation, you need to know when to use it! When applying your makeup you need to APPLY EYE MAKEUP FIRST, THEN FOUNDATION/BRONZER/ETC. Eye shadow can dust off onto the face which will ruin your foundation.  Instead, apply eye shadows, etc first; clean the excess and then apply foundation.

2. concealer use

Concealer is advertised to hide blemishes and hide those dark circles under your eyes. The tricky part is that they are not the same concealer! Concealer you use for dark circles is a totally different ball game than the concealer you use for those pesky little blemishes. Make sure to use a concealer a shade lighter than your skin tone for dark circles, and use a creamy concealer that matches your skin tone to conceal blemishes. Otherwise you will instead highlight the pimple, and still look tired.

         2a. concealer technique

On top of making sure to use the correct type of concealer, you need to make sure you are using it correctly! Concealer is EXPENSIVE so do not waste it! Concealer for blemishes should be applied after foundation for any small touch ups that need to be conducted. Concealer for under eye circles should be applied first and in a thin layer so as not to have it hang out in the creases below your eyes. Also make sure to apply under eye concealer in a large triangle below your eye, not in a little swipe on your lower eyelid. This way the entire eye area is brightened and the dark circle is not highlighted.

3. got oily skin like me? keep using lotion and use proper items to combat shine

So I have pretty oily skin, especially in the summer; but guess what? Your skin will still dry out after washing it if you do not apply a thin layer of moisturizer. The face will become dry and then go into panic mode and produce an over zealous amount of oil.....which leads to ZITS. There I said it, ZITS. If you are concerned about making your face too oily, try a gel moisturizer like Clinique's gel moisturizer on your T zone and a cream moisturizer everywhere else.

Also, with oily skin we all know shine is associated. I have found another Clinique product which is AMAZING to combat shine. ......*drum roll*......STAY MATTE LIQUID FOUNDATION. The foundation is liquid (duh) however when it dries on your face after application, your face stays matte!  If powder if more your game, do not over do it with the foundation powder. Instead swipe a thin layer of clarifying powder before foundation to combat the shine! This way, you won't look cakey, and will still have full coverage. Also, AVOID SHIMMER FACIAL PRODUCTS-THEY WILL JUST EMPHASIZE THE SHINE.

Are you sweaty and need to combat shine in a pinch? Use blotting wipes from your purse, or toilet seat covers if you forgot them!

4. BRONZER IS YOUR FRIEND, BUT NOT IN ALL OVER YOUR FACE FRIEND.

If you want a tan, do not look to bronzer to make your entire face tan. Bronzer is for contouring and bringing focus where a tan would naturally darken your face (cheek bones, temples). Use highlighter and blush to complete the look as well.

5. love your brushes

Your brushes are your tools to awesomeness. That does not mean that they can't be fallible. If not cared for they will drag bacteria all over your face and eyes which can lead to zit central or even pink eye. So CLEAN YOUR BRUSHES WEEKLY!!! Bare Minerals has an awesome brush shampoo that keeps them soft and gets rid of all the build up and bacteria.

"poe"

Went quite bold today and tried on my new lipstick my friend Amy gave me for Christmas=) It is part of  Kat Von D's Studded Lip Stick Collection in the shade "Poe." It's a navy blue color with an ever so subtle bit of shimmer=) It goes on like velvet, as do the other shades I have at home, and the wear is long lasting=) It does come off when drinking coffee or rubbing your fingers on it, however if you add lip liner under it the color stays on all day. Enjoy!

Major Concealer #truthbomb

Many of you have probably been doing something so simple, so wrong, for so long.
Your are not alone!
I too was doing this wrong for a long time until I was properly informed.
Wanna know what my new tip is?

. . .

PUT YOUR CONCEALER ON AFTER LIQUID FOUNDATION.

. . . . . . . wait what? why?

I was flabbergasted with this knowledge when I was first told too. I always thought that the concealer was the major covering of my blemishes and dark spots and thus needed to go on under foundation bc it was thicker. WE WERE WRONG. The following reasons are why the concealer goes on above the foundation:

1. Foundation is normally enough cover to begin with!

2. If not, you will only need a THIN layer of concealer on top of the foundation to cover any blemishes or dark spots.

3. You will thus use less product, which SAVES YOU MONEY! When applying foundation after the concealer, you are actually lifting up the concealer you just spent so much effort putting on. This means that you are wasting your concealer (which can get pretty expensive) by lifting it up after probably already using too much.

PS: This does not apply for powder foundation. Concealer should go on under powder foundation due to the type of finish powder foundation produces.

Sephora challenge

location: the mall at short hills

CHALLENGER: ROSITA QUINONES
HER INSTAGRAM: _PAINT_ME_PRETTY_

In case you ladies were not already aware...Sephora is where it's fuckin' at when it comes to buying make-up and learning how to put it on right. Ulta is great for those staple items we already know we like and is great when they have sales on good hair products. However Sephora is the woman's CANDY STORE

Thus, because I love this store OH SO MUCH, I decided to give them a challenge.

THE CHALLENGE:

I only asked for 2 key, yet vague, things that I love on my face (bold theme with contour work) and that was it. I went in there and said "This is what I am wearing, and I want you to be as creative with my face as you want!"

RESULTS:

PROS:

It was like I had a new face.  Blemishes...where? Dark circles...wtf are you talking about? Dry skin....NO MORE!
Negative stuff that used to be there was now GONE. Before the makeup went on it felt like I had a mini facial. My face was hydrated, refreshed and ready to go!

Contouring was on point. Not only did she contour my face to perfection, she taught me how to do it properly at the same time. Who knew so many products went into the perfect contour! Guess what the pièce de résistance is to the contour.....
Two words: B-A-N-A-N-A POWDER! And you totally sang with a Gwen Stefani voice didn't you ;)

The eye make up she did was also a learning experience with a gorgeous outcome. I mentioned I was going to a holiday party later in the day so she played up some green shadow with brown accents to make my eyes pop! She taught me that when putting on the 'crease' portion of the shadow, you should actually keep your eyes open. Which makes sense because you will be seen with your eyes open, not closed!

DAT LIPSTICK WAS DA BOMB...AND IT WAS SEPHORA BRAND!
She definitely listened when I said I love the bold look because mah lips were loud as hell! AND I LOVED IT.

CONS:
All that liquid makeup was too much on my face. When it comes to my daily life, I am always touching my face (even though I know I shouldn't). Thus, all of the liquid makeup that goes into doing the contoured look, was just way too much on my face for me. I went to itch under my eye for a quick second and a whole swirl came right off, making my under eye lopsided until she was nice enough to fix it for me. It also got into the creases under my eye, which were quite ostentatious considering I got 3 hours of sleep the night before. What made this con a little better in the end was the make up fixing spray which kept it more so in place.

It took over an hour to do.  Now I love getting the perfect "look," just as much as the next girl, but DAMN! Spending almost two hours at Sephora, not only for the make up being done itself, but to wait 40 minutes until someone was able to come over and help? BOO.
Now for me being the blogger, and them being busy on a holiday, I waited happily to get my face done ;D. However if someone was there to buy a whole new make up collection and learn how to get their best look while shopping at the mall, there is no way they would want to wait that long. Also in regards to time, the longest it takes me to do my makeup is 30-35 minutes. Taking into consideration the time it took for her to select the products for my look, it took her about double that time to do the look (which means that this specific look she gave me was mad complicated).

OVERALL EXPERIENCE:

In conclusion, I think Rosita did a great job with the look. From the view point of third party individuals at the christmas party (and my mama!)  the make up itself looked great! The best part was that I got the makeup done at 11:00AM in the morning and it stayed on all the way to 11:30 PM when I got home!

How to put your best brow forward

have issues making your natural eyebrows really pop?

here are some tips to help you figure that shit out!

For Blondes:

Those with sparse hair: Pick a powder that is 1-2 shades DARKER than your HEAD HAIR color. Find a typical blonde colored pencil.

Those with lots of brow hair to work with: Pick a powder that is as close to your BROW HAIR color as possible.

1. Use a SPOOLIE BRUSH to comb through your brows (upwards first and then out towards your ears). Yes you do have to brush the hair there too!

2. Outline and lightly fill your brow with a blonde brow pencil.

3. Then use a slanted brush to fully fill in your brow with the POWDER.

4. Clean up the edges of the brow (where you might have gone overboard) with concealer and diffuse any harsh lines you may have made outlining the brow.

For Brunettes:

Those with sparse hair: Pick a powder that is 1-2 shades lighter than your HEAD HAIR COLOR.

Those with lots of brow hair to work with: Pick a powder that is as close to your BROW HAIR color as possible. Since brunette brows are naturally dark, I find that those who are still blessed with thick face bushes above their eyes should stick to just powder and not use a pencil. Pencil on thick brows makes me think of Groucho Marx every time.

1. Use a SPOOLIE BRUSH to comb through your brows (upwards first and then out towards your ears). Yes you do have to brush the hair there too!

2. Use a slanted brush to outline and fill in your brow with the POWDER.

3. Clean up the edges of the brow (where you might have gone overboard) with concealer and diffuse any harsh lines you may have made outlining the brow.

AND voilà! PRESTO! FINITO!

~HOW TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT RED LIP~

or any lipstick colored lip ;}

11.20.14
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg

From Marilyn Monroe to Katy Perry, the perfect red lip has been a classic favorite. However to the general public, it seems only achievable by by celebrity makeup artists. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! Here are a set of instructions to achieve that beautiful matte or glossy red lip!

1. Exfoliate your lips to make them a nice, smooth canvas for application. You can use a toothbrush as an improv tool, however I love using Lush's Popcorn flavored sweet and salty lip scrub (it tastes like kettle corn when you lick it off!)

2. Apply a thin layer of chapstick. This will give something for the lipstick to stick to and allow for an even smoother canvas. My favorite to apply is Chapstick brand dual-ended hydration lock (the "night" end). Also apply a very thin layer of concealer around lip perimeter so that the color does not bleed. (LIP LINER ALSO HELPS THIS-SEE STEP 3)

3.  Apply a lip liner!!!!! Red lipstick LOVES to bleed into the crevices of your lip and onto your chin and area right above your upper lip. The color of lip liner shoulder be one shade darker than the lipstick you are using. When applying the lip liner, trace just inside the natural line of your lips. You can also apply a thicker line of liner at the sides of your upper/lower lips so that the major middle parts appear lighter and reflect more light.

4. Applying the lipstick to the entirety of your lips (do not go past lip liner). A lot of people simply use the stick, however to do an expert job applying the lipstick, use a LIPSTICK  BRUSH. Smile while applying, and start at the center and blend outward with the brush. This will enable you to get into the corners of your lips and not go past the lip liner you applied. Once you apply the first layer, BLOT. THEN apply a second thin layer on top to make sure the color stays put for most of your day.

6. Apply gloss if you want a shiny finish vs a more matte finish. Also, when applying the gloss, try to keep most of it it in the center of your mouth so that your lips can appear fuller at the same time. If you want a matte finish, skip this step.
